Desert Rock Stars

Desert Rock Stars
This quilt is for my cousin Jamie who lives in New Mexico.   Its in desert colors.  The center of each star has petroglyph style horses and Native American symbols.  The same fabric is used in the narrow frame surrounding the center of the quilt.  The boarder is a wide Native American petroglyph fabric in sand colors.  Jamie chose fabrics for the backing from a quilt shop in Las Cruces, where she lives.

This was the block layout for the star blocks.  This pattern is modified from a Marsha McClosky wall hanging.

Cartwheel

I made this quilt for my cousin Vicki, who is a world traveler.  The center motif is from Puerto Rico and I had been making lots of compasses that year.  So, after making the cartwheel motif, I added the flying geese around it.  I wanted to include mariner's compasses with a lot of movement and sparkle.
I liked the square in a square idea, and I wanted it to be asymmetrical and balanced.  So after a lot of thinking and drawing pictures I came up with this design.  I think it's the first quilt that I completely designed myself.

I wrote the label using black Sharpie permanent marker.
